KENNETT SQUARE — Ground broke for new luxury apartments on West State Street during a windy afternoon ceremony on Tuesday with executives from Berger Rental Communities uniting with borough officials to mark the moment.
Berger Rental Communities, a family-owned and operated business founded in 1972 and baked in Wayne, is bringing 166 luxury apartments to 600 South Broad Street.
Construction is anticipated to take two years to complete with the first renters potentially being able to move in by the spring of 2024. Berger Rental Communities is working with MV+A, Montrose Environmental, and Harkins on the project. Kennett Square Apartments will feature 15 floor plans including studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom units.
The apartment community is set to feature 166 apartment units within two, four-story residential buildings totaling 160,000 square feet.
The two apartment buildings will be built on West State Street between South Washington Street and Mill Road. This land was previously composed of four separate parcels and spans 2.63 acres. Across the street are two additional parcels that will become part of the new community including a park and space for some additional parking.
Officially named Kennett Square Apartments, the residential community will be dog friendly and be home to a fitness center as well as community and media rooms. The property will feature a basement level garage with electric charging capabilities.
"Breaking ground on Kennett Square Apartments is an extremely exciting opportunity for our company," said Wayne Everett, vice president of acquisitions and asset management at Berger Rental Communities. "Over the last decade, we have expanded our footprint across Chester County and are eager to continue providing exceptional amenities, technology, and convenience to this growing, vibrant and historic community through Kennett Square Apartments."
Kennett Square Apartments will become Berger's 12th apartment community in Chester County.
This summer, preconstruction began at the corner of West State Street between Washington and Mill, as previously reported. Elsewhere in town, the municipal government now operates at 600 S. Broad St. after moving from its old home at Marshall Street.
Presently, construction continues for the all-new $21.7 million, 33,425-square-foot Kennett Library and Resource Center at the corner of Willow and State streets. The public facility is set to open this May.
"We are very excited to be building in Kennett Square," said Matt Johnson, director of development for Berger during the ceremony on Tuesday.
"We love Kennett," Johnson said.
"This project is very much needed," said Dan Berger, chief executive officer of Berger Rental Communities.
"Renting shouldn't be hard," he said.
"Change is not easy," said Kennett Square Mayor Matt Fetick. "This is a big project."
He said the project will anchor this side of town.
"I'm really excited about the final product," he said. The mayor noted his excitement for what the residents have to look forward to once the project is completed.
"We look forward to making this as smooth as possible," the mayor said.
A special place
This past summer, the Daily Local News asked Kennett Square Police Chief William Holdsworth about the community he serves.
"When I have that question asked, at times I ask myself what doesn't make Kennett Square special? From the diversity of our residents' cultural and ethnic backgrounds to the variety of businesses who have chosen to make Kennett Square their home, we have such an incredible mixture of so many wonderful people in the Borough of Kennett Square," Holdsworth said.
"The staffing across the borough is yet another part of what makes Kennett Square great. Everyone from the staff at the waste-water treatment plant, Public Works, codes, borough administration, finance, to the police department works to make this borough the special place that it is," the chief said.
