The cost for private holiday accommodation in the UK has increased by 41 per cent during the coronavirus pandemic as staycationers rush to seaside resorts and countryside retreats.

Holidaying in the UK is costing hundreds of pounds more than travelling to European destinations, according to the consumer group Which?.

Data from AirDNA reveals the average costs of self-catering accommodation across the whole of the UK were roughly £300 per week greater this year than in 2019.

In many seaside towns prices are even higher. Private accommodation in Brighton cost on average £109 per night in August 2019 but this August that cost rose by 89 per cent to £206. Prices increased in St Ives in Cornwall by 42 per cent, Sidmouth in Devon by 63
