The country's accommodation offering has come a long way since the days when a cabin stay meant roughing it in a spidery bothy or barn, or pretending someone's garden shed was akin to a Wild West pioneer pad. Now our cabins are just as stylish as those in Scandinavia or the US, and come in a huge range of varieties and styles, with high-tech touches, luxurious interiors and indulgences such as outdoor showers, wood burners and wood-fired hot tubs. Whether you want to hide away in a remote spot in a forest, stay above a beach in Cornwall or hole up in a rural hinterland in your wooden abode, you'll find some great options here.

Offa's Dyke Escape
9. Offa's Dyke Escape, North Wales
If Hobbits had been more concerned with fashionable tiles and tropical foliage than second breakfasts and rings, their homes might have looked like this. Cute and curvaceous, the cosy woodland cabin Offa's Dyke Escape is a far cry from the average self-catering cottage, and featured on the George Clarke's Amazing Spaces TV show. St Asaph and the mountains of Snowdonia are nearby, but a hike is probably just a formality before hitting the hot tub.
