With endless walking and hiking opportunities – only an hour's drive to Scafell Pike – it's an outdoorsy type's dream. There is also a Beatrix Potter tour of the local area which walks in the footsteps of the inspiring author, illustrator and business-woman, including the first farm she bought with the proceeds from Peter Rabbit, the castle where she holidayed with her family as a teenager, and the home she shared with her husband William Heelis.
