Where to go on holiday in March 2023 - Condé Nast Traveller

Image
Temperature: 19°C high; 13°C low Season: spring Travel time from UK: 2 hours 35 minutes Time difference: GMT +1 Nothing brings a spring to the step quite like the sight of Italy's glorious Amalfi coast. Particularly in March, when its vertiginous twists are bathed in a daily average eight hours of sun. Cliffs plunge into the Tyrrhenian Sea, topped with grand palazzos and smart hotels. Narrow, Roman lanes are stuffed with limoncello stalls flogging the boozy spoils of Sorrento's famous fruit. Its snoozy air and pastel-coloured houses are pure Italian cinema: you might even swear you've seen a young Sophia Loren looking impossibly saucy by the quay. Do as the Italians do and spend the lazy, romantic days enjoying a long aperitivo . Don't miss fresh fritto misto at Marina Grande, the town's old fishing harbour, or Michelin-starred Il Buco in the cellars of an old monastery, where chef Peppe Aversa serves seasonal ingredients under a stone-hewn, vaulted ceiling. Shop owner making the move to renovated Baken Park shopping center - Rapid City Journal

Image
{{featured_button_text}} Tanya Manus Journal staff Baken Park's major makeover is generating a buzz. Real estate agency Perkins Properties reports the shopping center's renovation is drawing interest from potential tenants. "It's been amazing to me the number of phone calls we're getting. In the time of COVID-19, there's a lot of entrepreneurial spirit out there," Tim Martin, general manager and leasing agent at Perkins Properties in Omaha, Neb., said Monday. Martin said he hopes more retail shops will lease space there, but other types of tenants are welcome, too. "We want good, reliable tenants that treat their customers well and that serve the Rapid City area well. If you get tenants that have a good product — I don't care what product — and they serve their customers well, they're going to be successful and that's what we're looking for," Martin said. Baken Park is owne...

Cottage prices rise as more Canadians look toward future of full-time remote work - Global News

Home prices are increasing in Canada's cottage country as more buyers look to move there full-time, according to a report released Monday by Royal LePage. Prices of single-family recreational homes rose 11.5 per cent to an aggregate of $453,046 in the first nine months of the year, the real estate brokerage said. The data from Royal LePage comes amid an overall uptick in home prices this year, after COVID-19 lockdowns stymied the spring buying season. A rush of demand and a limited supply as the economy reopened this summer and fall meant that home prices were up 15.2 per cent last month in Canada compared to a year ago, according to the Canadian Real Estate Association. Read more: Demand surges for cottage rentals during coronavirus pandemic Royal LePage chief executive Phil Soper says the number of cottages, cabins, chalets and farmhouses on the market have also dwindled amid the increased demand, at least through September. Vacation-Home Rentals at Area Resorts Are Surging: You Get Privacy but Also Access to Lots of Activities - Washingtonian

Image
Once upon a not-so-distant time, travelers who vacationed at resorts wanted to be in the thick of the action—in a lodge room that was a short walk from the restaurants, tennis courts, and swimming pools. A pandemic, of course, has changed how we travel—if we travel. While resorts still are luring people who want activities like golf and skiing versus renting a remote cabin with nothing to do, even those travelers want some separation from other guests. Alisa Cohen, founder of Luxe Traveler Club in DC, says the biggest request she's getting from clients is renting a private house at a resort. Fortunately, there are many to choose from in the region—most resorts have free-standing houses for rent, often along golf fairways. Plus, says Cohen, Washington-area clients who once didn't want to drive more than three hours are now willing to drive ten—essentially, up to Maine or down to Georgia—opening up more possibilities. We asked Cohen to recommend some favorite resorts for ...

Construction stopped on veteran's home A contractor suddenly stopped work on a wounded veteran's home, causing several issues. BUFORD, Ga. - A grant from the Department of Veterans Affairs was supposed to be a life-changing opportunity for Daniel Lister, a disabled veteran living in Buford. Instead, it turned out to be a nightmare for Lister, his wife Ashley, and their four children. Lister lost his left leg after he stepped on an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan while serving in the Army. He has injuries to his other leg and arm as well. In 2010, he applied for a grant through the VA to make his home more wheelchair accessible. In late 2018, the grant was approved. "[There will be] a master bedroom on the main floor, so that I don't have to go upstairs. It's to make my house especially adapted to me," Daniel Lister said. Two-storey houses: Double storey house plans, designs, costs more - Architecture and Design

Image
Where does a two-storey house originate from? The earliest are from the Indus Valley Civilization (c.2,500 - 1,700 BC). Evidence from Mohenjo-daro suggests a flat roof or upper story as stairs are found going up, although it is suspected upper stories are found much earlier than that, but don't have the same level of preservation as Mohenjo-daro. For example, the Near East houses are generally mudbrick and so don't survive to particular heights usually, and earlier excavations rarely bothered with anything other than the monumental architecture. 4th Millenium Uruk-Warka for instance, would have at least occupiable flat roofs, but they simply haven't been excavated. Earliest evidence of flat roofs go back to Çatal Hüyük in Turkey, A Neolithic town. Seems the houses were accessed from above via ladder. Again this is probably an issue of preservation. The Minoans were building elaborate palaces like the one at Knossos from at least 3,000 BC also. Simple two-storey dwel...

Putting the incoming explosive growth along North Temple into perspective - buildingsaltlake.com

North Temple District welcoming art, at the I-15 overpass. Photo by Luke Garrott. We just want to make sure people are prepared for what's coming to the North Temple corridor. Along with several other accolades, 2020 may become known as the year that developers capitalized on the potential offered by public investments in transit, associated high-density zoning and Opportunity Zone designation near transit stations along North Temple in Salt Lake City. It is the year in which Rocky Mountain Power announced its intentions to open up its sprawling footprint — on the scale of a second Downtown — to mixed use development. But other, more tangible proposals were added to the hopper that residents should brace for as construction on thousands of units begins in coming months and years. In all, developers added 2,280 new housing units to the queue for an area that has been on the cusp of a development explosion for years, according to a review of all TSA applications submitted...
