Two new restaurants and an urgent care facility are among many new construction projects going on in Fort Smith.
Walk-On's Sports Bistreaux, a restaurant and sports bar that has Drew Brees of New Orleans Saints fame as a part-owner, is nearly completed at 4036 Phoenix Ave. It is near the curve that snakes under Interstate 540.
C.R. Crawford Construction is building the Fort Smith Walk-On's Sports Bistreaux.
There are currently two Walk-On's Sports Bistreaux in Arkansas. One is at 4050 S. JB Hunt Drive in Rogers and the other is at 955 South Amity Road in Conway. There are about 20 Walk-On's in Louisiana and the chain has many other restaurants across the South, including one on the Texas side of Texarkana.
Blue Ember Smokehouse

Dirt work for what will become Blue Ember Smokehouse started recently near 8000 Phoenix Ave., across from Mercy Orthopedic Hospital and near the new Chambers Bank along Little Massard Creek.
According to the City of Fort Smith, the developer is Prime Restaurant Group LLC.
C.R. Crawford Construction is also building the Blue Ember Smokehouse, a 5,000 square-foot building, according to Jordan Ligon in Business Development for the construction company.
Kevin Sneather of Charleston, a Memphis resident for 20 years, is one of five partners behind Blue Ember Smokehouse, a locally owned and operated restaurant that is expected to be up and running by mid-May. Plans call for indoor-only seating for up to 140 people with curbside pickup for to-go orders. They also plan to hire 40-50 people to run the restaurant seven days a week.
Space for a drive-thru window is also in the plans in case the restaurant industry is put back under COVID restrictions. Sneather said they will be using barbecue rubs and sauces developed by his uncle, Jim Turner, a barbecue competition champ from West Memphis.
Baptist Health Urgent Care

A building permit was released Monday to Baldwin & Shell Construction Co. for a $560,000 tenant infill at 1910 S. Zero St., in a building next to what was once Blockbuster video store.
Baptist Health officials confirmed the space is being turned into an urgent care facility and they will release further details after the new year.
Other projects
In the first week of December alone, more than $9.7 million in value for non-residential building permits was approved. Other site improvements in Fort Smith include Arvest Bank at 8000 Taylor Ave., multiple security upgrades to four elementary schools, an office addition at Methodist Village Senior Living and infrastructure repairs by the City of Fort Smith Utility Department.
