Work on the future site of Halifax Health's urgent care center in Daytona Beach Shores began recently, a little over a year after the City Council unanimously approved the lease agreement, according to hospital officials.
The south side of the city's former senior center has been demolished while the north side is being refurbished by Halifax Health.
Once construction and updates are completed, Halifax Health will begin a 20-year lease of the 3,100- square-foot building at 3048 S. Atlantic Ave.
Since 2017, there has been a lack of urgent care services on the beachside after Hurricane Irma caused irreparable damage to Florida Hospital Oceanside in Ormond Beach. The former hospital was demolished in the summer of 2019.
The total cost of this project, which will become the only urgent care center on the beachside, will be $1.1 million and is expected to be completed in the summer of 2021, according to Halifax Health spokesman John Guthrie. The cost of the project doesn't include equipment and furnishings.
As part of the lease agreement, the city will construct a modified building on the remainder of the property, a 12-space parking lot and access lanes. The city has budgeted $150,000 for its part of the project.
As for Halifax Health, they will need to make roof repairs, interior improvements and widen the driveway north of the building for emergency access.
Rent for Halifax Health will be $1,000 a month, which will be adjusted each year. When the lease is up, Halifax Health will have the option of renewing for two additional 10-year periods.
The new urgent care center will include express care in partnership with Noon Health and imaging services in partnership with Radiology Imaging Associates, according to Guthrie.
