Where to go on holiday in March 2023 - Condé Nast Traveller

Image
Temperature: 19°C high; 13°C low Season: spring Travel time from UK: 2 hours 35 minutes Time difference: GMT +1 Nothing brings a spring to the step quite like the sight of Italy's glorious Amalfi coast. Particularly in March, when its vertiginous twists are bathed in a daily average eight hours of sun. Cliffs plunge into the Tyrrhenian Sea, topped with grand palazzos and smart hotels. Narrow, Roman lanes are stuffed with limoncello stalls flogging the boozy spoils of Sorrento's famous fruit. Its snoozy air and pastel-coloured houses are pure Italian cinema: you might even swear you've seen a young Sophia Loren looking impossibly saucy by the quay. Do as the Italians do and spend the lazy, romantic days enjoying a long aperitivo . Don't miss fresh fritto misto at Marina Grande, the town's old fishing harbour, or Michelin-starred Il Buco in the cellars of an old monastery, where chef Peppe Aversa serves seasonal ingredients under a stone-hewn, vaulted ceiling. Steeply Slanted and Wonderfully Rustic: How Much Does It Cost To Build a Trendy A-Frame Home? - Realtor.com News

Image
The COVID-19 pandemic reinforced (and in some cases, ignited) our collective desire to own a home, our own space away from others—and preferably one that reflects our distinct needs and style. But buying a typical house might seem increasingly out of reach for many people. In addition to a spike in mortgage interest rates and stubbornly high home prices, there's an overall shortage of properties for sale. Hence the rise in buying or building alternative types of homes firmly outside a traditional Colonial—we're looking at you floating homes, bardominiums, and a perennial favorite: A-frames. Are you dreaming of turning your A-frame fantasies into reality? Read on for a low-down on how much constructing this trendy home will set you back. What is an A-frame home? An A-frame is an iconic triangular-style home that features modern lines, open floor plans, and plenty of light. And their inherently simple structures are relatively inexpensive and easy to build. "A-frames are ...

How To Steal Aaron Paul's Cozy And Rustic Home Style - House Digest

Image
When you're getting inspiration for a modern mountain home, you'll notice there is much less maroon and forest green than you might have expected from rustic cabin design. Instead, we recommend choosing a few subtle accent colors that sit against neutral backdrops. Aaron Paul and Lauren Parsekian opted for dusty rose and moss green throw pillows in their incredibly lush lounge room. Still, the rest of the space comprises creamy white, natural wood tones, stone, and metal finishes. To figure out the right color palette for your home, choose the tried and true 60-30-10 rule.   What makes the Paul-Parsekian home feel so immersive and comforting is that this palette is drawn throughout the residence, not just in one room. If you have a flair for the more dramatic tones and patterns, take another note from Aaron and Lauren, and devote an entire level of the home to them, in their case, the basement. The Balance notes that in the United States, homeowners see a ...

Step Inside 7 Craftsman Homes That Are All About Cozy Grandness | Architectural Digest - Architectural Digest

In 2013, the couple moved into their 1920s Craftsman home. It had lots of space (Milewski, who released four new singles this year, needed a music studio) and was in good condition, especially considering the climate, which does no favors for old houses. Slowly they restored the windows, painted the exterior an avocado green, and uncovered the living room's original ceiling mural, previously painted over. Amid these thoughtful renovations, a steady stream of artist friends—many of whom crashed in the guesthouse for weeks or months—also left their own marks. Jim Drain conjured the entry's new ceiling mural, inspired by the patchwork textiles of Florida's indigenous Miccosukee people, while Katie Stout—fresh out of RISD—personally delivered and installed a chandelier after the first one she shipped arrived shattered. "Nina's so good at her job because she really believes in her artists and the work," says Stout, whose career has blossomed in the years since, tha...

1902 Victorian house restored in OKC's contemporary SoSA neighborhood - Oklahoman.com

Image
The newest residential showcase in Oklahoma City's SoSA district, a neighborhood filled with new modern contemporary houses, is also one of the city's oldest.  The oldest home in Oklahoma City is the Shepherd house, built in 1889 and displayed at the Harn Homestead east of downtown. Most other surviving city houses from pre-statehood were built in 1902 or later, including a two-story Victorian at 614 NW 8.  The Victorian is the sixth preservation job for Kenna Oden, who, along with business partner Jarrod Rogers, has spent the past five years slowly and painstakingly stripping asbestos siding from the home and preserving the few original interior features while otherwise gutting and building all new kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms.  Oden describes the transformation as "turd to treasure."  "It's one of the few Victorians left in Oklahoma City," Oden said. "And it's the only painted lady with downtown views. B...

Iowa-based Alquist hopes to ease housing crisis with 3D-printed homes - Des Moines Register

Image
STANTON — On an overcast day in June, a robotic nozzle spits out concrete like buttercream from a pipette.  Four workers watch to ensure the nozzle, suspended from a boom moving along a 40-foot-long track, hits its computer-programmed marks. It pipes a 3-foot circle of wet concrete, then another two just to the right. That process complete, the boom returns the nozzle to the first circle, where it pipes another layer. Eventually, the layers reach 2 feet in height. Ryan Hasler, center, a print operator with Alquist 3D, watches a new machine capable of printing homes from cement during a training session in the southwest Iowa community of Stanton. Zach Boyden-Holmes/The Register The massive 3D printer here is making vaults that will house junctions for fiber optic cables underground. But there's a larger goal: to train the workers to use a similar machine to make 3D-printed homes for Iowans.  Alquist 3D, an Iowa City-based compan...

Warehouse construction at and near the former Dutch Springs water park, now known as Lake Hydra, is moving ahead. Developers Trammell Crow Co. (TCC) and Clarion Partners said Monday that Lehigh Valley Trade Center II, at 4939 Hanoverville Road, "is nearing completion and will deliver 527,000 square feet of Class A warehouse and distribution space to the market." Ground is breaking for Lehigh Valley Trade Center III, on the Dutch Springs site at 4733 Hanoverville Road in Lower Nazareth Township. That project will provide 588,000 square feet of warehouse space and distribution space and be complete by late 2023. Part of that property extends into Bethlehem Township. The old aqua park is gone, but scuba diving will continue at the quarry lake. DIVE LLC, led by former Northampton County Council President Ken Kraft and dive-shop owner Jim Folk, will operate the lake for recreation...

For Homebuilders, Something Has to Give - Banker & Tradesman

Image
Lew Sichelman Some renters would give up a bedroom in their current place and rent a smaller unit – if it meant they could save more quickly for a down payment on their first home.    Whether to settle for a three-bedroom house instead of four is a choice many buyers have to make, and that will continue in the months ahead – especially if housing costs and mortgage rates remain stubbornly high.   In the new-home sector, many builders are making that choice for them: not just in the number of bedrooms, but also the number of bathrooms, the size of the garage or lot, and anything else where builders can pare costs to make their plans less expensive to build.   Going forward, said Anja Seng, a senior research analyst at John Burns Real Estate Consulting, builders will be facing the same challenges as their customers. Some will charge ahead as planned; some will mothball projects an...
