Where to go on holiday in March 2023 - Condé Nast Traveller

Particularly in March, when its vertiginous twists are bathed in a daily average eight hours of sun. Cliffs plunge into the Tyrrhenian Sea, topped with grand palazzos and smart hotels. Narrow, Roman lanes are stuffed with limoncello stalls flogging the boozy spoils of Sorrento's famous fruit. Its snoozy air and pastel-coloured houses are pure Italian cinema: you might even swear you've seen a young Sophia Loren looking impossibly saucy by the quay. Do as the Italians do and spend the lazy, romantic days enjoying a long aperitivo . Don't miss fresh fritto misto at Marina Grande, the town's old fishing harbour, or Michelin-starred Il Buco in the cellars of an old monastery, where chef Peppe Aversa serves seasonal ingredients under a stone-hewn, vaulted ceiling. 11 Yorkshire log cabins and luxury lodges ideal for a snug winter getaway - Yorkshire Live

There's something slightly magical about staying in a log cabin in the woods.

It's a way of getting closer to nature and further away from the pace and noise of your everyday life.

And there's something pleasantly primal about sitting in a cosy little lodge in front of a wood fire, surrounded by trees with squirrels and badgers for neighbours.

For all the latest places to visit and stay around Yorkshire click here.

You can, of course, enjoy a similar experience by camping but let's face it, you'll be roughing it. That's unless you're glamping which isn't really camping anyway.

With a lodge you get the best of worlds; you're close to nature but you're not sleeping on the ground in a sweaty (or freezing cold) tent.

Here's a selection of recommended* log cabins and lodges around Yorkshire that are perfect for a cosy, winter getaway.

* These are recommended by Yorkshire.com, Yorkshire's official tourism agency, or have the highest rankings on Tripadvisor.

Surrounding two lakes, near Richmond, are these 21 self-catering, five-star lodges which sleep between three and six people.

The stylish lodges come with modern luxuries including a private hot tub while the 26-acre private estate they're on includes facilities for tennis, lake and river fishing plus mountain biking.

Craven Shepherd Huts

Next to the acclaimed Craven Arms pub, in Appletreewick, in the Yorkshire Dales, are these traditional shepherd's shelters.

Shepherds would traditionally wheel these log cabins onto the pasture where their sheep were grazing. Obviously, these shelters are smarter and somewhat more comfortable with electricity, a wood burner and a proper loo and shower.

Dalby Forest Lodges

These three small, cosy lodges are probably the most back-to-nature on our list. There are unspoilt views of Yorkshire's most famous forest but also all the mod cons you'll need.

According to its website, there's no mobile phone signal which means it's a place where you can truly escape the sensory overload of modern life.

Falsgrave Lodges

This site with excellent views of Scarborough and Oliver's Mount, features four modern, luxury lodges, each with a hot tub.

It's half an hour's walk to Scarborough's South Bay but rural enough to be blessed with visits from the local badger population!

Flowery Dell

Flowery Dell, near Richmond, has a variety of lodges from small American pioneer-style cabins to large alpine-style lodges with room for six people.

It's ideal for a romantic getaway or a family break.

Griffon Forest Lodges

These functional rather than flash lodges at Flaxton, near York, are nonetheless comfortable, well-equipped and stylish. Plus you'll be surrounded by tall trees for a proper woodland cabin experience.

Olicana Park

By the River Wharfe in the upmarket village of Addingham is this site with real log cabins, except on a grand scale.

Imagine a modern, detached house full of luxuries, except made from logs – and with better views.

Rocklands Lodges

Set within five acres of gardens and pine trees are these 16 lodges, 14 of which come with a hot tub.

The site, near Pickering, has a strict policy on large group bookings, so you're pretty much guaranteed a quiet, relaxing break.

As the name states, this site near Ampleforth has luxurious wooden lodges on stilts surrounded by pine trees. You could almost be in the Black Forest.

Whinstone View

From moderately fancy to seriously luxurious, these seven Scandinavian lodges each come with a hot tub, a complement of mod cons and plenty of style.

If you fancy being a bit more sociable there's a bistro and bar on this site, at Great Ayton, on the northern fringe of the North York Moors.

Wolds Edge

Nestled in the trees on the edge of the village of Bishop Wilton, near York, is this collection of lodges including a large tree house, snug huts, family lodges and romantic lodges with hot tubs.
