Where to go on holiday in March 2023 - Condé Nast Traveller

Image
Temperature: 19°C high; 13°C low Season: spring Travel time from UK: 2 hours 35 minutes Time difference: GMT +1 Nothing brings a spring to the step quite like the sight of Italy's glorious Amalfi coast. Particularly in March, when its vertiginous twists are bathed in a daily average eight hours of sun. Cliffs plunge into the Tyrrhenian Sea, topped with grand palazzos and smart hotels. Narrow, Roman lanes are stuffed with limoncello stalls flogging the boozy spoils of Sorrento's famous fruit. Its snoozy air and pastel-coloured houses are pure Italian cinema: you might even swear you've seen a young Sophia Loren looking impossibly saucy by the quay. Do as the Italians do and spend the lazy, romantic days enjoying a long aperitivo . Don't miss fresh fritto misto at Marina Grande, the town's old fishing harbour, or Michelin-starred Il Buco in the cellars of an old monastery, where chef Peppe Aversa serves seasonal ingredients under a stone-hewn, vaulted ceiling. Trump remakes his election night plans. - The New York Times

Image
President Trump has called off plans to appear at the Trump International Hotel on election night and is likely to be at the White House instead, according to a person familiar with the plans. Advisers had said privately that Mr. Trump was going to appear at his namesake hotel in Washington for an election night party for which his campaign had sent out multiple fund-raising solicitations to his supporters. "November 3rd will go down in history as the night we won FOUR MORE YEARS. It will be absolutely EPIC, and the only thing that could make it better is having YOU there," read one solicitation from the president that included an image of Mr. Trump and the first lady, Melania Trump, under the words "Join us on election night." It was unclear why the plans had changed. But the prospect of the president appearing on the night of the election at the hotel was certain to reinforce concerns about Mr. Trump mingling the office with his business. It woul...

Best UK road trips: the most epic driving routes across England and Scotland to take this winter - Stylist Magazine

Image
When you're ready to move on, take the coastal road eight miles east to Beer where there's a gorgeous beach filled with tiny huts selling cold drinks, hot chips and the possibility of dolphin spotting in the cove. Wiggling your way further east, it's possible to stop and have chips at every seaside town: each has their own award-winning chippy and a beach with views to boot. But don't forget to plot in a visit to Chesil Beach, the 18-mile shingle beach made more famous by Ian McEwan in 2007.  While you're down that way, stop off on the Isle of Portland for a couple of nights in pure bliss at Clifftops, part of the Pennsylvania Castle Estate. The unique development of five luxury lodges is hewn out of the Portland stone cliffs. Inside and out they smack of Grand Designs beauty, with unparalleled views of sunset and sunrise from every angle of the apartment (request Ope if you can).  From here, the last stop on your way home is via Dorset's most famous sight: ...

Trump Administration Announces 400 Miles of New Border Wall Construction - NTD

Image
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on Thursday announced 400 miles of completed U.S.-Mexico border wall construction and said the Trump administration is "well on its way" to having 450 miles of new border wall deployed by the end of the year. Calling the barrier a "critical component in gaining operational control of the border," DHS said in a statement that areas where barriers were deployed saw drops in illegal drug, border crossings, and human smuggling activities. "Neglected, easily compromised, and sparsely constructed, the border fence concept needed a reinvestment in 2017," DHS stated. "From day one, President Trump prudently recognized that America must have an effective border wall system that delivers first-of-its-kind capabilities to the men and women of the USBP [U.S. Customs and Border Protection]." DHS said that on Oct. 23 there were 386 miles of new border wall built, with construction averaging around 10 miles per we...

A looming tragedy in the University of Dhaka’s centennial celebration - The Daily Star

Image
Is this the right way to celebrate the centennial of the University of Dhaka in 2021? Like many of my colleagues in Bangladesh and around the world, I was horrified to learn that the university administration has made plans to demolish a 20th century architectural icon inside the university campus to expand and upgrade its insufficient facilities. Yes, change is inevitable. And so is growth. But how does a society treat its cultural heritage as it grows? This is a perennially contested question that warrants thoughtful judgement in a specific time and place. However, it is truism that a conscientious society treats its cultural patrimony with utmost care. The iconic Teacher-Student Centre, popularly known as TSC, the universally admired centre of the country's student politics and cultural life, may soon face the wrecking ball. This will be an irredeemable national tragedy. Let us consider the history of this beloved building complex. The Greek architect, planner and theoretici...

Downtown Lebanon apartment proposal shrinks following pushback - Valley News

Image
LEBANON — A Hanover-based developer has cut plans for a proposed five-story apartment building that neighbors worried would loom over Bank Street and surrounding homes in downtown Lebanon. The 29-unit building across from the AVA Gallery and Arts Center, first pitched in October, was not included in scaled-back plans Jolin Kish presented to the Lebanon Planning Board on Tuesday night. Kish said the building was trimmed from the project after city officials in July denied it several waivers, effectively killing efforts to bring 40 new apartments to the neighborhood. Instead, she plans on constructing an 18-unit, three-story apartment building at 14 Bank St., which is now home to a boarding house. That new structure, Kish said, is based on designs from the one that was recently panned. "We just took what the building was and cut it in half, took the parking lot from under it and turned it 90 degrees," she told the Planning Board during its Tuesday meeting. Kish said...

How COVID-19 is changing Halloween plans this year - Marketplace

Armed with pipes, foam and paint, Michigan resident Breanne Cremean spent several hours constructing a device that will still allow her to give out candy to trick or treaters this year: a "Beetlejuice" candy chute. She was inspired to make it after seeing someone online make their own version, and thought it would be a cute way of passing out candy while keeping everybody 6 feet apart.  "The hardest part was figuring out the right angle to put it at so that the candy doesn't get stuck," Cremean said, laughing. "My husband and I did a lot of testing." A view of the candy chute that Breanne Cremean created. Innovations like candy chutes have grown popular because of the pandemic, creating a market for businesses like the appropriately named Candy Chute to capitalize on it. "Candy Chute was invented to provide a safe way to deliver candy to a trick-or-treater this Halloween," the company wrote on its website. The COVID-19 crisis ha...

Biden’s Plans for Latin America: End ‘Bully Dictating Policy’ - The New York Times

Image
RIO DE JANEIRO — Former Vice President Joseph R. Biden admits it was a contrarian view in the Obama White House. During its final years, when the administration was beset by North Korea's nuclear arsenal, Russia's belligerence in Ukraine and wars in the Middle East, Mr. Biden argued for tackling a predicament closer to home: the violence and poverty that was causing large numbers of migrants, many of them children, to flee from Central America. It was an intractable problem, but one the United States could resolve, he said in his memoir, "Promise Me, Dad ." "Of all the crisis spots around the world, I had come to believe that Central America held the best opportunity," Mr. Biden wrote. Mr. Biden, the administration's top troubleshooter for Latin America, logged thousands of miles in trips there, building relationships with Central American leaders — and helping convince Congress to pass in 2015 a $750 million aid package for the region....

White House informs Congress of plans to sell as many as 50 F-35s to UAE - The Times of Israel

Image
NEW YORK — The Trump administration has updated Congress of its intent to sell F-35 advanced fighter jets to the United Arab Emirates, a ranking House Democrat announced on Thursday. The informal notification to the House Foreign Affairs Committee revealed that the White House plans to sell as many as 50 units of the Lockheed Martin-made jets for roughly $10.4 billion, a senior congressional staffer told The Times of Israel. Israel has ordered the same number of F-35s from the US, though not all of them have been transferred yet. The committee's chairman, Elliot Engel (D-NY), will introduce legislation on Friday to prevent the sale from moving forward without strong assurances that it won't harm Israel's Qualitative Military Edge (QME) in the region and that American adversaries will not be able to gain access to the military technology, the staffer said. Similar legislation has already been introduced in the Senate as well. Get The Times of Israel's Daily Editi...
