Where to go on holiday in March 2023 - Condé Nast Traveller

Image
Temperature: 19°C high; 13°C low Season: spring Travel time from UK: 2 hours 35 minutes Time difference: GMT +1 Nothing brings a spring to the step quite like the sight of Italy's glorious Amalfi coast. Particularly in March, when its vertiginous twists are bathed in a daily average eight hours of sun. Cliffs plunge into the Tyrrhenian Sea, topped with grand palazzos and smart hotels. Narrow, Roman lanes are stuffed with limoncello stalls flogging the boozy spoils of Sorrento's famous fruit. Its snoozy air and pastel-coloured houses are pure Italian cinema: you might even swear you've seen a young Sophia Loren looking impossibly saucy by the quay. Do as the Italians do and spend the lazy, romantic days enjoying a long aperitivo . Don't miss fresh fritto misto at Marina Grande, the town's old fishing harbour, or Michelin-starred Il Buco in the cellars of an old monastery, where chef Peppe Aversa serves seasonal ingredients under a stone-hewn, vaulted ceiling. An historic cottage pairs French style and coastal vibes - Homes & Gardens

Image
It's the picture-perfect English thatched cottage. Steeped with history and sympathetically renovated inside and out, the 17th-century gem is situated at the heart of an idyllic East Devon village and is one of the oldest properties in the area.  The cottage's historic connections and Grade-II listing would be sufficient in themselves to make this one of the world's best homes , but add to that its characterful French-style décor, and beautifully curated vintage and antique furnishings and this property really is something special.  For the past few years it's been home to seasoned renovators Christina Dickinson and her husband Nigel. The couple weren't intending to buy a long-term home when they found the thatched cottage. However, as soon as saw it they loved it and recognised its potential – even though it needed a substantial amount of work, as well as a new thatched roof.  They saw past the overgrown front garden, which made the cott...

Tour a Colorful Birmingham Cottage by Hundley Hilton 2022 - Veranda

They finish each other's sentences. Borrow each other's clothes. Supplement place settings from the other's dinnerware stash—easy, since they have the same wedding china (an early hint of simpatico tastes). So when Janie Jones decided to start fresh on her prime Mountain Brook, Alabama, lot, replacing the small cottage her family of four had outgrown with a new home with slightly more elbow room, she knew exactly who to turn to for design guidance. In fact, she has turned to her every day since 2016, when Jones and Elizabeth Miles launched Hundley Hilton Interiors, their Birmingham design business. "Elizabeth is the yin to my yang," says Jones. "She's the wildly creative one, while I've got the organized spreadsheets. My style is more old-fashioned and granny chic, heavy on florals, and she pushes me to be more edgy." Even so, for Miles, it's one thing to strike a balance on client projects and another when the client is also your business p...

The Boston Police Department Announces the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative During Sexual Assault Awareness Month — bpdnews.com - BPDNews.com

The National Sexual Assault Violence Resource Center (NSARC) has declared April Sexual Assault Awareness Month #SAAM.  The Mission of NSARC is to raise awareness about sexual violence around the world, and to educate communities on how to prevent it. For the Boston Police Department (BPD), we honor this call to action by focusing on the launch of a 2.5 million-dollar, 3-year grant, that was awarded to the BPD in December of 2021, titled the FY 2021 Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI).  The Mission of Boston's SAK Initiative is to improve Boston's capacity to respond to violent crime, and the functioning of its criminal justice (CJ) system through the investigation and prosecution of cases resulting from SAK evidence, and the collection of lawfully owned DNA.  To accomplish that Mission the BPD will work to improve the criminal justice system's response to victims of sexual assault, in partnership with a wide range of criminal justice (CJ) and ser...

The Austin Opera House could be revived as part of a development at 200 Academy Dr., but a group representing the surrounding residents argues a venue that size would create untenable traffic in the landlocked South Austin neighborhood. Ahead of a...

The future site of the 200 Academy development (Photo by Jana Birchum) Among mixed-use plans for housing, shopping, a museum, and a recording studio at 200 Academy Dr., an envisioned music venue has become the sticking point. The development hopes to revive the former Austin Opera House club off South Congress. While the owners imagine a midsize destination comparable to the Paramount in capacity, neighbors angle for a smaller venue akin to the nearby Continental Club. During initial approval of a first reading of plans back in January, City Council members indicated bargaining would be necessary between the disagreeing parties. Ahead of a second reading at the May 5 council meeting, neighbors suggest a compromise of two separate music venues, rather than a centralized larger one. The proposal was created by the Greater South River City Combined (GSRCC) Neighborhood P...

Exterior cathedral renovation project nears completion - Catholic Diocese of Cleveland

Image
After a year of work, the end of an extensive exterior rehabilitation of the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist is approaching, as the diocese marks its 175th anniversary. Bill Brady of the Diocese of Cleveland Facilities Services Corp., which is overseeing the project, said much of the exterior work is in the final phase. It is the first major exterior work done on the structure since the expansion/reconstruction project that took place after World War II, 1946-1948. The original section of the cathedral was built 1848-1852, during the tenure of Bishop Amadeus Rappe, first shepherd of the diocese. During the past year, all the cathedral's exterior masonry and mortar were inspected, cleaned and repaired. Sealant is being applied to ensure the surfaces are watertight. (See photo gallery above.) The front steps on East Ninth Street were removed, rebuilt and new granite surfaces will be installed. Brady said Bishop Edward Malesic, who has been staying apprised of the progres...

How the pandemic is changing home design - Axios

Image
The pandemic has changed what Americans want from their homes, and builders say they expect those changes to last. The big picture: A ton of pandemic-era adaptations are becoming common fixtures in new homes. The model homes that builders are showing off today are meant for working, living and learning, not just coming home and crashing at the end of the day. Details: Big pre-pandemic trends — open plans with big kitchen islands — aren't going anywhere. "My verdict is that people really like open floor plans, and they're here to stay," says Nancy K. Keenan, president of Dahlin Group Architecture and Planning, who helped conduct the America at Home Study of pandemic-era consumer tastes in home design. But overall footprints are getting bigger as builders add on more smaller rooms, which may need to function as offices, play rooms, home gyms or dens, depending on the family. Bathrooms are getting bigger, in part because we use them more often when we're home all day...

Cohousing' group plans community of 32 cottages in Marysville | HeraldNet.com - The Daily Herald

Image
MARYSVILLE — In many neighborhoods, you can drive your car into a garage, close the door behind you and rarely talk to your neighbors. Jennie Lindberg and her husband, Dean Smith, are building a different kind of neighborhood. In Sunnyside Village Cohousing, neighbors would know one another. Some might help care for kids or elders. Three nights a week, they would gather for community dinners. This is just a slice of what life might look like at the newest "cohousing" community forming in Snohomish County. Lindberg and Smith, of Everett, hope to begin construction of the 32-cottage neighborhood early next year at 3121 66th Ave NE in Marysville. An open house will be held there starting at noon Saturday. Lindberg said she likes to tell people unfamiliar with cohousing that it's just like a normal neighborhood. "It is not a commune; it is not a cult; it's not a belief system," she said. Cottages will be privately own...

Breadcrumb Trail Links Retail & Marketing News FP Economy Move part of broader push in industry to claw back market share from seltzers, canned cocktails luring drinkers away Ace Beverages Group launched Ace Hill Carb-Free beer in Ontario this month. Photo by Courtesy Ace Beverages Group Article content Ben Toffelmire invited friends over to his apartment one night in late 2019. Around his dining room table, he poured unmarked beer bottles into red cups and watched his guests faces as they took sips. Advertisement 2 Article content At the time, Toffelmire was 27, just months into a big job at Toronto craft brewery Ace Hill, and he needed some feedback on his latest endeavour: a carb-free beer, developed in a 10-gallon lobster pot on his stovetop. The focus group he'd assembled that evening was a handful of old friends — the sort who weren't squeamish about telling each other hard truths, be it about someone's toxic rela...
