The Seattle-based architect Michael Eliason has a number of complaints about the way America makes its apartment buildings. The components are inferior, he says: The best sliding doors and windows are made elsewhere. The designs rarely accommodate larger families. And there are too many staircases. Too many what now? For the second year in a row, many Lane County families received a small, unexpected gift in time for the holidays. In a collaboration between the Lane Community Health Council and United Way of Lane County, 1,700 families across Lane County received $50 gift cards for their holiday celebrations and day-to-day needs. "We are excited to partner with United Way again to relieve a little bit of pressure during this busy time of year for families throughout Lane County," said Tony Scurto, community impact committee chair for the Lane Community Health Council. The fire started in the garage of the new addition the family had nearly completed, though an investigation by the state's Fire Marshal yielded inconclusive data on the cause. In the months since the blaze, the Joswiaks have been the recipients of numerous donations, from cash and clothes to food and furniture — and a nearly-too-good-to-be-true tip on a potential rental within a mile of their acreage.
