Where to go on holiday in March 2023 - Condé Nast Traveller

Image
Temperature: 19°C high; 13°C low Season: spring Travel time from UK: 2 hours 35 minutes Time difference: GMT +1 Nothing brings a spring to the step quite like the sight of Italy's glorious Amalfi coast. Particularly in March, when its vertiginous twists are bathed in a daily average eight hours of sun. Cliffs plunge into the Tyrrhenian Sea, topped with grand palazzos and smart hotels. Narrow, Roman lanes are stuffed with limoncello stalls flogging the boozy spoils of Sorrento's famous fruit. Its snoozy air and pastel-coloured houses are pure Italian cinema: you might even swear you've seen a young Sophia Loren looking impossibly saucy by the quay. Do as the Italians do and spend the lazy, romantic days enjoying a long aperitivo . Don't miss fresh fritto misto at Marina Grande, the town's old fishing harbour, or Michelin-starred Il Buco in the cellars of an old monastery, where chef Peppe Aversa serves seasonal ingredients under a stone-hewn, vaulted ceiling. Planners renew effort to take control of building permits – Coastal Observer - Coastal Observer

With architectural guidelines in place, the town of Pawleys Island needs its own building inspector to enforce them, Planning Commission members say. They made their third pitch in three and a half years to Town Council to take back plan review and inspections from Georgetown County and hire a private firm to do the work. "We will be able to control our own destiny," said John Hildreth, who chairs the commission. The issue was first raised by Administrator Ryan Fabbri in 2018. He was concerned at the time that work was being done without permits. Since county inspectors only came to the island for building inspections, they weren't catching the unpermitted work. The Planning Commission endorsed the idea, but Town Council never took up the recommendation. In June 2020, as the commission worked to craft a set of architectural guidelines for new houses, the issue reemerged. The owner of a contract inspection service, CC&I, outlined how the services worked. Th...

Terrigal residents oppose boarding house - Central Coast News - Central Coast Community News

Image
More than a dozen submissions of objection have been received to a proposed boarding house at 23 Ash St Terrigal, with traffic, security, and privacy issues highlighted as major concerns. The proposed boarding house would comprise 10 rooms catering for up to 13 boarders with five carparking spaces, including one disabled, two motorbike spaces and two push-bike spaces to be provided on site. There would also be a communal room with associated outdoor recreation space. A Statement of Environmental Effects (SEE) lodged with the application says the original character of modest holiday cottages in the area is changing rapidly, with apartment and townhouse developments springing up nearby. The SEE says the boarding house is not intended to provide specialist or support housing for persons with a mental illness or physical disability, persons on a very low-income level such as the homeless or particular community groups. Rather it is intended to provid...

On the market: A three-bedroom ‘carriage home’ in Montgomery County for $650,000 - The Philadelphia Inquirer

Image
When Joe Abbott was pondering the wisdom of buying a new house for himself and his wife, Diane, his tax adviser had a pointed question for him: "How much fun do you have with your mutual funds?" Joe has known the adviser since they were in first grade together, so the advice carried a lot of weight. The Abbotts bought the larger house in Lower Gwynedd, both as a good investment and for ample cavorting space for the grandchildren. "We upsized," says Joe, a retired financial executive with a pharmaceutical firm, leaving behind a smaller "carriage home" — in this case, Realtor-ese for an upscale twin — in Upper Gwynedd. The gourmet kitchen features 42-inch cabinetry, granite countertops an island with seating, and stainless steel appliances. .  ...  Read more Colin Burkhart The couple bought that three-bedroom, 3½-bath house in a cul de sac in a development with Belgian block-lined streets right after it was built in 20...

Planning Commission rejects zone change recommendation to city council - Cottage Grove Sentinel

Image
In a rare move, the Cottage Grove Planning Commission last Wednesday (Nov. 10) voted against a city staff recommendation that the commission recommend a zone change request to city council. An application from landowner Don Nordin to rezone land at 1142 Chestnut Ave. from R1 to RC (Residential Commercial) prompted public discussion at the planning commission meeting and concerned some in the neighborhood. It was ultimately determined through the discussion that Nordin's housing plans could move forward without the zone change. "I think we would rather ensure it comes back so we have community input, especially since it doesn't preclude him from doing what he says he wants to do," said Commissioner Darby Valley regarding the decision to vote against the recommendation. Valley also referenced a zone change of the old Harrison Elementary School from R1 to R2 passing through the commission with little resistance in 2019. In that case, the land ended up not being u...

7 Surprising Expenses That Always Come Up When Renovating a Kitchen - PureWow

Glasshouse Images/Getty Images 1. Special Plumbing for Farmhouse Sinks Farmhouse sinks are beloved for their deep basins, but that feature can also present a challenge. "Many design professionals don't realize that those fixtures need specialized plumbing and fitting, since they take up more room underneath the sink," says Matt O'Rourke, president of national plumbing, sewer and drain repair company Z Plumberz. If you're consulting with a designer or architect on your remodel, it's worth bringing in a plumber to review the plans, so you have a clearer picture of what work needs to be done to achieve the look you want. (O'Rourke recommends budgeting $1,000 to $3,000 for kitchen plumbing in general, just to be safe.) 2. Delivery Fees In the Amazon era, doesn't everything come with free, two-day ship...

What’s hot and what’s not in home styles - The News-Press

Image
Andrea Stetson  |  Special to Fort Myers News-Press There is modern, contemporary, transitional, coastal, Key West, West Indies and  Mediterranean. Then there is the lesser seen farmhouse, cottage, colonial, Cape Cod, craftsman, ranch, Tudor, split level, art deco, Victorian, log home, mid-century modern,  Asian, pueblo, and more. So people building or buying a home have a lot to choose from. Back in the 1990s and early 2000's it was simpler. Most people were selecting the Mediterranean look with its rounded arches and columns. But that's fallen out of favor, and what's replaced it, isn't one style anymore, but a variety of styles with some common traits. "The trend today is not the trend," said Gary Aubuchon, owner of Aubuchon Homes. "There is not a predominant style today as it was in the mid 2000's when virtually everything was Mediterranean." John Cooney, a partner with Stofft Cooney Architects in Naples,...

What Happened on Day 2 of the COP26 Climate Change Summit - The New York Times

Image
President Biden scolded Russia and China for not participating in the United Nations summit on climate change and drew a sharp contrast between the two countries' efforts and the American leadership. Erin Schaff/The New York Times GLASGOW — President Biden capped two days of climate talks with fellow world leaders by hailing new international commitments to curb warming, knocking China and Russia for not participating, and expressing confidence that his domestic climate agenda will clear the House and Senate. The president said he felt certain that Senator Joe Manchin III of West Virginia, a key Democratic holdout on the $1.85 trillion climate change and social safety net bill that Democrats are debating in Congress, would ultimately vote for the bill. "I believe that Joe will be there," Mr. Biden said. "I think we'll get this done." Mr. Biden drew a sharp contrast between American leadership and the efforts of China and Russia, whose leaders did not travel ...
