Where to go on holiday in March 2023 - Condé Nast Traveller

Image
Temperature: 19°C high; 13°C low Season: spring Travel time from UK: 2 hours 35 minutes Time difference: GMT +1 Nothing brings a spring to the step quite like the sight of Italy's glorious Amalfi coast. Particularly in March, when its vertiginous twists are bathed in a daily average eight hours of sun. Cliffs plunge into the Tyrrhenian Sea, topped with grand palazzos and smart hotels. Narrow, Roman lanes are stuffed with limoncello stalls flogging the boozy spoils of Sorrento's famous fruit. Its snoozy air and pastel-coloured houses are pure Italian cinema: you might even swear you've seen a young Sophia Loren looking impossibly saucy by the quay. Do as the Italians do and spend the lazy, romantic days enjoying a long aperitivo . Don't miss fresh fritto misto at Marina Grande, the town's old fishing harbour, or Michelin-starred Il Buco in the cellars of an old monastery, where chef Peppe Aversa serves seasonal ingredients under a stone-hewn, vaulted ceiling. SCSC releases drawings and floor plans for expansion and renovation projects - Seymour Tribune

Seymour Community School Corp. plans to keep the public updated on its three major construction projects every step of the way. This week, the corporation uploaded new information to its website that allows community members to view the architectural renderings and floor plans for the upcoming expansion and renovations of three school facilities. Those plans can be viewed at www.scsc.k12.in.us/community/construction-projects-and-renovations. "Once we start building, we're going to try to put pictures on there," Superintendent Brandon Harpe said. School board members had the opportunity to view the drawings first during a presentation by VPS Architecture last week in the Seymour High School cafeteria. It has been six months since Harpe announced the district would invest more than $52 million without raising taxes to address safety, growth and expand programming. The projects will add classrooms and a greenhouse at the Ag-Science and Research Farm, expand and...

Biden’s narrow path to an infrastructure dream - POLITICO

Image
The most efficient way to create new revenue, at least for things like roads and bridges, rail and transit, is to boost the federal tax on gasoline, which hasn't been raised since 1993. But that's also one of the most politically toxic options, perennially broached and then shoved aside as too difficult to do, even in times of prosperity and low unemployment. Biden could decide to just fund it all by increasing the deficit, but that's a difficult pill for fiscal hawks to swallow, and considering the razor-thin margins in Congress, any effort will have to be bipartisan enough to attract the support of at least 10 senators to avoid a filibuster. Partisan objections to either of those options — raising taxes or approving massive deficit spending — could be short-circuited by using an arcane budget tool called reconciliation, which only requires a simple majority vote in the Senate. But it comes with significant limitations on how it can be used, and the leadership would ha...

Exceptional Croissants, French Bread and Pastries Coming to Santa Rosa With New Bakery - Sonoma Magazine

Eating croissants in America can be about as horrifying as ordering a hamburger in France — something is usually lost in the translation, especially if you're used to the real thing. Cottage baker and French expat Alexandra Zandvliet wants to change that, using American ingredients to replicate the very specific, buttery, shattered-crust laminated pastries of her homeland for delivery right to your door. Expanding to French baguettes, fig bread, Viennoise baguettes (a softer loaf), rye, orange-peel brioche, canneles and other complex pastries, her small-but-growing baking business Sarmentine is gaining traction one loaf at a time. And sometimes they're even still warm. A former midwife, Zandvliet started baking as a hobby when she moved to California and struggled to find the kinds of bread she loved back home. American flour is often far more glutenous than European, giving breads a fluffier texture, like cake. American butter is often lower in fat and in general, there ...

Rose Cottage's European Delight in Afton - Midwest Home Magazine

Image
A Charming Vision Johnson introduced innovative changes to the space, like a pocket door and new marble shower tile, and the Petersons added personal touches with Swarovski crystal lighting fixtures and a bird-and floral-patterned wallpaper. The pièce de résistance, however, was the 100-year-old buffet doors the couple brought home from France. Hand-carved from solid walnut and featuring a beautiful design of a woman in her garden, the pieces were turned into a new cabinet and finished with a soft patina for cohesion. A pull-out rack between the shower and doorway increases storage in this 50-square-foot master bathroom in Afton. Accessibility with a Perk In addition to its luxurious, zen-spa-meets-European-cottage feel, the bathroom also has accessibility features built in—with one particular decision changing the space's storage abilities. The standard tub and shower combo was replaced with a more accessible shower that features grab bars and a door that opens both ways. ...

7 Frank Lloyd Wright–Designed Homes Have Been Sold or Listed in 2020 - Architectural Digest

Image
Many of Wright's single-family home designs were situated in small towns scattered across the U.S. His Goetsch-Winckler Home is just one of four houses he designed in the Lansing area of Michigan, and according to sellers Audrey and Dan Seidman, it was the architect's "favorite small house." Completed in 1940, the one-story house features red brick walls and concrete floors, with plenty of telltale Wright features, like a cantilevering roof, horizontal planes, and plenty of strategically placed windows throughout to allow inhabitants to feel one with nature. The 1,400-square-foot Goetsch-Winckler Home is considered Wright's second Usonian design, and is as practical as it is aesthetically pleasing: A brick fireplace that juts into the middle of the large, open common space has a dining table attached to it, and an alcove on the other side of the fireplace features built-ins that align perfectly with the house's wood paneling. It was listed for $479,000 in May ...

The Irish architect who became the ‘megamansion king’ of LA - The Irish Times

Image
A modest background meant Paul McClean was often playing catch up in architecture college. now he creates homes for the richest people in the world Dublin-born, Los Angeles-based architect Paul McClean knows a thing or two about how the One Per Cent like to live. "We've been putting working beauty salons in homes for 15 years," he says. "It started with a Middle Eastern family who explained that they didn't want to go out to get their hair or nails done, and they'd rather bring friends to the house so they could do it all together." When you have the space, why not, right? McClean has been described time and time again as LA's "megamansion king", and no wonder. He's famously the architect behind what's being called "the most expensive house in America". The One, a 105,000 sq ft mansion on a 5-acre parcel in Bel Air, was created for developer Nile Niami a decade ago. The house, bearing McClean's trademark ultramod...

What the Democrats' Agenda Will Mean for Your Pocketbook - Kiplinger's Personal Finance

Image
In early January, a much-anticipated runoff election in Georgia answered the question of which political party would control the Senate for the next two years: Democrats Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock clinched the two seats up for grabs, delivering the Senate a 50-50 split between Democrats and Republicans. Vice President Kamala Harris casts tie-breaking votes on legislation, giving Democrats an effective majority. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer determines the schedule for votes on legislative proposals. With President Joe Biden in the White House and a narrow Democratic majority in the Senate and House of Representatives, Democrats have a clearer path to enact their agenda. In the near term, Biden and Congress are expected to focus on urgent matters of the economy and the pandemic, such as stimulus aid for struggling Americans and coronavirus vaccine distribution. Infrastructure and climate change are top issues, too. And at some point, policymakers will likely tackle other...

Builder's 10-year plan includes up to 5,000 homes in southern Pender | WilmingtonBiz - Greater Wilmington Business Journal

Image
A Wilmington-based builder of houses, townhomes and apartments recently closed on a 130-acre tract on Sidbury Road along the New Hanover County and Pender County line, planning to eventually own more than 1,200 acres in southern Pender for future development. The 1,200 acres could hold up to 5,000 for-rent and for-sale residential units built over the next 10 years. McAdams Homes paid $1.5 million to Blakes of Scotts Hill LLC for the 130 acres, the second recent Sidbury Road transaction for the company. A small portion of the land is in New Hanover County. The purchases are helping McAdams Homes deploy capital from the recent sales of Budget Storage, an apartment community in Lake Wylie and Belle Meade, an apartment complex off Carolina Beach Road in Wilmington. "As we started to look at and evaluate new opportunities, it became clear that one of the areas we wanted to direct more resources to was southern Pender County," said Adam Sosne, CEO of McAdams Homes, in an email. ...

Remarks by President Biden on the American Rescue Plan and Signing of Executive Orders - The White House

Image
State Dining Room 3:04 P.M. EST THE PRESIDENT:  Good afternoon, folks.  Vice President Harris and I just received a briefing from our economic team, and we remain in a once-in-a-century public health crisis that's led to the most unequal job and economic crisis in modern history.  And the crisis is only deepening.  It's not getting better; it's deepening.  Yesterday, we learned that 900,000 more Americans filed for unemployment — 900,000.  They join millions of Americans who, through no fault of their own, have lost the dignity and respect that comes with a job and a paycheck.  So many of them never thought they'd ever be out of work in the first place.  And just like my dad did when he was — he used to lie awake at night when I was a kid, staring at the ceiling, unable to sleep because he worried about whether or not he's about to lose his healthcare, or whether we were going to be — or have the money to pay the mortgage because of the economic circumstance h...
